Vastu for Plots: Choosing the Right Land Direction & Shape

Good Vastu begins before you build — with the plot itself. Direction, shape, slope and the road position all shape the energy of a future home. If you are buying land, here is what to look for.

Plot shape

A square or rectangular plot is ideal — balanced and easy to plan. Rectangles are best oriented with the longer side running North-South. Avoid irregular, triangular or heavily-cut plots; if a corner must be cut, the South-West should stay intact and the North-East is the best corner to be extended.

Plot direction and facing

All facings can make excellent homes, but each has strengths. North and East-facing plots are especially valued for prosperity and health. A North-East extension is auspicious. What matters most is designing the home correctly for the plot’s orientation — a good architect makes any facing work.

Slope and levels

The ideal plot slopes gently down toward the North or East, and is higher in the South and West. This lets water and energy flow the right way. Avoid plots that are lower in the South-West.

Roads around the plot

• North or East road: generally very favourable.
• Roads on two sides (North + East): excellent.
• South or South-West road: workable with the right design; not a deal-breaker.

Surroundings and water

A water source or open space in the North or East is auspicious; heavy structures or tall trees are better in the South and West. Check what neighbours’ buildings and drains fall where, as they influence your plot’s energy too.

Before you buy — a quick checklist

• Square or rectangular, with the South-West corner intact.
• Gentle slope toward North or East.
• Road ideally on the North or East.
• Open space or water source to the North-East.
• Clear title and buildable as per local rules (a separate but essential check).
